Zimbabwe were hoping for another day like the one against Australia in the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 warm up match. But Mahela Jayawardene and a storm were standing in their way.
First the storm by the name of Jayawardene rocked the stadium with a blazing century. 100 runs off sixty-four balls was how the newly appointed opener responded to the task. And in the process, Sri Lanka were trying to put Zimbabwe in place. But Zimbabwe did fight, through a few intermittent wickets, to perhaps restrict Sri Lanka from touching the 200 mark.
One look at the scorecard would show the weight of Jayawardene’s innings in a situation where Sri Lanka had lost Muttiah Muralitharan to injury and the team needed to win this match at the Providence Stadium in Guyana to stay alive in the tournament else, remain dependent on the outcome of the Zimbabwe v New zealand match.
Even as Sri Lanka set Zimbabwe a challenging target of 174, the storm clouds blew over the stadium and unleashed in a torrent of rain.
