Ajantha Mendis sniffed the life out of India as the Board President’s XI match has proved to be a major embarrassment for the visitors at the end of the second day’s play.
Apart from the huge partnership between Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh, the Indians were thrown to the deep end by Mendis who picked up six of the ten Indian wickets to fall in the day in the tour match of India’s tour of Sri Lanka.
Yuvraj Singh proved to be the unlikely century maker, eventually dismissed for 118, while Gambhir was once again leading the team with eighty-nine runs. Between the two of them, they raised an unusual partnership of 143 runs for the fifth wicket after India found themselves tottering at four down for eighty with the fall of V.V.S. Laxman.
Mendis’ scalps included three top wickets including that of Sachin Tendulkar and Gambhir and it seemed to be proving a point to the Sri Lankan selectors who have left him out of the squad for the Test series set to begin on Sunday.
