Ricky Ponting, the Australian captain, is not ruling out a role for the young spinner in Test cricket, as early as against Pakistan and India.
Steven Smith has been in the headlines for showing a lot of promise, especially in the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 in the Caribbean. Now the Australian captain is talking up the possibility of the young spinner making his debut in Test cricket.
Ponting spoke of Steven Smith, “He’s done everything right, he’s impressed everyone and his attitude is outstanding. He’s a work in progress as far as his bowling is concerned, as all young spin bowlers are. If he happens to get named in the Test squad for the matches against Pakistan I think that would be very valuable experience for him to be around the more experienced players a bit more. About playing two spinners, most teams who go there look at a couple of spin options in Tests in India.”
