It was a tricky announcement because the public announcement of Australia’s World Cup squad coincided with the timing of Michael Hussey going under the knife over the injury he sustained in the first England v Australia ODI.
Hussey’s hamstring tear was considered minor and then, elevated to serious to the extent that he has had to undergo surgery to repair the damage. What this means though is that Hussey will make a late dash for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 to be hosted in the Indian sub continent.
Although the Australian selectors announced Australia’s squad just in time for the ICC deadline, they have had to include Michael Hussey, naturally given his form of late, and pray that he recovers in time. The story remains similar as Ricky Ponting, the Australian captain, is expected to return in time for the World Cup after breaking a finger during the Ashes and requiring surgery for it.
Although Ryan Harris and Clint McKay have missed out due to their respective injuries, the possibilities have opened up for Shaun Tait and Brett Lee. While Lee has always been itching to call the World Cup in India his swansong, Tait has shown a preference for the shorter format having previously suffered a breakdown unable to cope with the workload and schedule.
However, the selectors saw it in their best interests to invest in the duo who can bring pace to to be table while also, being lethal. And it would be a foil to cover any ups and downs that may hit Mitchell Johnson as they have in the Australian summer.
Nathan Hauritz may have missed the Ashes but he wins the nod for the spinner’s role although Steven Smith is also in the mix of things. Although John Hastings may be considered a bit of a surprise inclusion, the rest of the squad pretty much picks itself.
