Chidambaram’s Proposal for IPL Postponement: Afraid of a Backlash?

Even as the horrow of what happened yesterday outside the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore was still sinking in, P. Chidambaram, the Home Minister used the opportunity to hit at the inadequate security as well as make a recommendation to postpone the IPL.
In the aftermath of the terror attack on the Sri Lankan cricketers, Chidambaram slammed the Pakistan government for providing inadequate security that caused so many injuries within the Sri Lankan team while taking the lives of the Pakistan police.
He stated that the security provided was “hopelessly inadequate” and reiterated the government’s stance not to send the Indian team to tour Pakistan, which in turn, saw Sri Lankan oblige Pakistan. India are currently on the tour to New Zealand.
Fearing a further backlash from terrorists and also, perhaps how a potential terror attack while the general elections and IPL games clashed, Chidambaram recommended that the IPL be postponed until after the polls stating that diving the available paramilitary force could compromise on the security concerns in the country.
