The England captain was right. There was nothing to be jumping for joy for.
The England team managed to avoid a series whitewash in the NatWest ODI series against Australia but it was only by a solitary win in the seventh and final match of the series. The botched middle order batting almost ruined the efforts in the bowling department. But such as been England’s travails of the summer.
Their efforts at home in the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 did not inspire many either. That they then managed to win the Ashes was perhaps something that got sandwiched between ignominy.
The England captain, Andrew Strauss, does not have a lot to work with given that the team he had during the NatWest Trophy will be the one going to South Africa for the ICC Champions Trophy.
England’s problems stem from the obvious lack of star power, especially in the batting. The injury to both their all rounders, Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen, has come as a bitter disappointment not only to the England team but also, to the many fans looking forward to a full strength England team.
Having said that, England are completely depleted. They still have match winning potential players. The thing England will battle against is getting their team in top confidence. The drubbing in the NatWest Series will not have helped. But South Africa will provide a change of scene and temperament and one can only hope that the England bowlers such as Stuart Broad and James Anderson will add zing to the contest, so England will perhaps have fewer runs to chase. Joe Denly and Eoin Morgan better brace themselves, the contest just got hotter.
