Mahendra Singh Dhoni does not have a lot of choice experience wise. His best shot happens then to be Yuvraj Singh as India take on Australia in the second ODI of the India Australia series in Vishakapatnam.
The Indian captain is without the services of his main men either through injury or rest. Himself battling niggles, Dhoni knows that all eyes are on Yuvraj Singh.
Yuvraj Singh has not been in the best of form and injuries over the year have not really helped his case. With Suresh Raina and Cheteshwar Pujara coming into the picture and performing well in Test cricket, many reckon Yuvraj Singh’s days are numbered particularly since the chairman of selectors, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, hinted that they were not happy with Yuvraj Singh’s form and fitness.
Yuvraj may have been surprised on the occasion but the Indian captain is throwing him a lifeline. Dhoni is defining Yuvraj’s role in the team that is without the likes of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar. This is what he had to say at the pre match press conference,
Our batting has always revolved around him. He is a type of player who can change gears at any point of time and can take complete control of the game. At the same time, he has played over 250 ODIs which means he has got a lot of experience.
The onus is now on Yuvraj Singh to grab the opportunity and once more silence the critics. To his credit, he did score a double century for the Rest of India team against Mumbai in the Irani Trophy even as India were playing Australia in the first Test.
