In a strong battle for the ultimate prize, Dwayne Smith helped Sussex over Somerset for the Twenty20 Cup on Finals Day.
The two England counties that have already qualified for the Champions League Twenty20 in India were locked in a late battle for the ultimate prize.
But Marcus Trescothick could not repeat the destructive effect he had on Kent and it meant that West Indian Dwayne Smith’s energy infusing fifty-nine from twenty-six balls proved the difference in the batting of the two teams. There were other useful contributions from the Sussex batsmen such as Luke Wright, Rory Hamilton-Brown , Chris Nash and Pakistan’s Yasir Arafat.
Somerset though faltered with maintaining a steady partnership to consolidate their efforts. James Kirtley, who ended up with three wickets, dismissing the man of the match of the second semi final, Trescothick, for fifteen. Despite the forty-three runs in less than four overs, Somerset tapered away after the initial effort and Justin Langer as captain could only look on in dismay as the Sussex bowlers stuck to their task, dried up the runs and eked out the wickets one after the other. A sixty-three run win was then the sweetest success for Sussex at Edgbaston.
