2010 ICC World Twenty20 Super 8's: Another Houdini Act for Australia Humiliates Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka thought they had a good thing going. That is until Cameron White joined forces with Michael Hussey before Dirk Nannes sprinkled his magic on the proceedings in the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 clash at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados.

Sri Lanka seemed on song as Australia were reduced to five down for sixty-seven, much like their match against Bangladesh. But a perfect story was horrifically destroyed as the famous Australian rearguard action took control of the innings and the match as it turned out.

Cameron White was considered a worthy contender for the role of the Australian Twenty20 captain and for good reason. White has shown not only enormous skills as an all rounder but also, has been a tough nut to crack as Sri Lanka learnt the hard way.

White's rescue was timely as was Hussey's contribution with the Hussey brothers proving to be vital cogs in the Australian set up. White though was the outstanding performer not only for bailing Australia out of a hole but also, putting up a soul destroying assault against the Sri Lankans.

Angelo Matthews contributed two wickets opening the bowling while Suraj Randiv justified his selection with three key wickets of his own in the Australian top order. But Sri Lanka failed to check White who played a knock of some majesty in his eighty-five run innings off just forty-nine balls. Hussey's contribution was thirty-nine runs in Australia's total of 168.

Stunned by the loss of control, Sri Lanka were further set back when Dirk Nannes brought matters to a grinding halt not only dismissing the largely inconspicuous man of the tournament, Sanath Jayasuriya but also, the man in form, Mahela Jayawardene. Shaun Tait picked up the case for Kumar Sangakkara while Mitchell Johnson derailed the middle over, and from five down for forty-nine in the seventh over, Sri Lanka did not have a Houdini in their dressing room.

Steven Smith made most of his outing as Sri Lanka cowered under pressure, and were humiliatingly cleaned up for eighty-seven runs in less than seventeen overs, losing by a whopping margin of eighty-one runs.
