A strong batting performance followed up by a nearly good showing with the ball ensured that South Africa humbled New Zealand by thirteen runs in the Super Eights encounter of the 2010 ICC World Twenty20.

The Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados was witness to a commanding partnership between Albie Morkel and AB de Villiers that gave South Africa a resounding start to the Super 8's bout.
The partnership followed another strong showing between the heavyweights of the team, South African captain, Graeme Smith, and Jacques Kallis, who opened the batting together. Although Smith departed once again looking good on fourteen, Herschelle Gibbs powered the innings on an emphatic knock of thirty runs. Kallis was dismissed before him for thirty-one runs and at three down for ninety-seven in the fourteenth over, South Africa needed a impact packed innings to drive them through against New Zealand.
It came in the form of AB putting up a strong performance but overshadowed completely by a nonchalant Albie Morkel who found the middle of the bat too often. While South Africa failed to make the most of the final over, it was the penultimate over that Albie used the long handle well to hit Tim Southee for three sixes in the same over.
AB contributed forty-seven runs from thirty-nine balls but it was Albie who stole the show with an eighteen ball forty cameo that included five of South Africa's eleven boundaries in the innings as South Africa finished on 170.
In reply, New Zealand had Jesse Ryder powering them through despite the early loss of Brendon McCullum to a brilliant catch by Gibbs off the bowling of Charl Langeveldt. The batsmen all got starts but failed to kick on and Ryder himself became the third wicket to fall in the innings at sixty-seven, Johan Botha getting his second of three wickets for the day. Morne Morkel continued from his four wicket streak against Afghanistan the previous night to pick up a couple as New Zealand succumbed to the total, the run rate and the pressure put on by losing wickets regularly to leave them on 157 for seven when the match drew to a close.
