Andrew Flintoff’s high hopes were dashed when he was diagnosed with a tear in his right knee and will now have to undergo surgery for the same.

Flintoff beat the critics and the deriders as he snagged a whopping 1.55 million dollar deal with the Chennai Super Kings for the IPL 2 season in the IPL auctions. While many argued the merit of the payment given that England are scheduled to play a home series against the West Indies, that he is injury prone cannot be denied.
His critics back in England argued that the Twenty20 was perhaps the only perfect option left for Flintoff who has not been able to make himself available for England for long periods. But it appears even the Twenty20 game has been unkind on him.
He will now have to go home and take care of himself sitting on the couch which goes against his ambitions of “picking a few brains” when it comes to the Indian players as also of being able to provide a longer role for the Chennai team as he had promised.
While England are thanking their stars that the injury has come at a time when he can recover before the Ashes or the ICC World Twenty20 championships, it is Chennai that must be wondering whether it was a blessing in disguise.
