Arthur's Resignation, Reasons and Restructing for the CSA Selection Panel

--> -->

Mickey Arthur's resignation does not appear as straightforward as it looks. If anything the dismissal of the entire selection panel by the Cricket Board of South Africa (CSA) points to a problem that South Africa have simply failed to overcome.

On the face of it, it appears that the South African coach was sacked due to the plateauing of results for South Africa in 2009. After all South Africa have not been able to build on their success from 2008.

But the cricket board of South Africa went a step further. The CSA decided to do away with the entire selection committee of four members that included former seamer, Craig Matthews, and chairman Mike Procter.

While reports floated around about a possible rift between captain-coach with Graeme Smith not necessarily happy with the progress with Arthur, Arthur himself revealed that his way of running things were not in sync with the way the CSA would have wanted to run things.

Amongst the many points being discussed was the question of matching the quota system even if it meant compromising on talent. Questions were raised over why and how Friedel de Wet and Wayne Parnell made it to the Test team against England when Makhaya Ntini hit a low.

What this has done though is call for a complete system overhaul, which coming as it does as South Africa take on India, some would say was not the most ideal time given that South Africa only managed to draw against England as the visitors managed to survive two nail biting contests.

What it has meant though is that South Africa will learn very quickly that it is not easy to make it to the top Test team in the world and that no victory can be taken for granted for something as big as this could only be around the corner.
