Ashes T 5 Day 2 Lunch and Tea: Broad Brings England Back into the Game

The transformation of one session meant that it no longer mattered how many runs Stuart Broad had scored to extend England's lead. The fact that he had a terrific impact in the session between lunch and tea could have easily meant the deciding of the Ashes.

Broad's thirty-seven runs in the morning session when England managed to only extend their first innings in the fifth Test of the Ashes at the Oval to 332 from an overnight score of 207 for eight, mattered significantly little as it became apparent just how much of his efforts with the ball were required to topple Australia.

In the meantime, James Anderson picked up his first duck of his Test career.

Rain signalled an early lunch by five minutes but ate up a significant amount of time after lunch. By then, Australia were comfortably placed on sixty-one for no loss.

What happened when play resumed in the extended session before tea was another matter altogether. Ricky Ponting would have been shocked had he known that Australia would have lost eight wickets for seventy-two runs. It did not look on the cards when Shane Watson batted well for thirty-four and Simon Katich reached his half century.

But it all unravelled soon after. Watson was plumb lbw to Stuart Broad and the England bowling all rounder simply took on the confidence for more. At that time the Australian scorecard read seventy-three. By the time Broad appeared to satiate himself, Australia were staring at ninety-three for four, all four firmly in Broad's pocket.

Broad then had the Australian captain playing on, and had Mike Hussey lbw no soon thereafter. As the England crowd woke up to the heroics, the Australian crowds were beginning to sober. The wind blew Broad's way again as Michael Clarke, the prolific century maker on this tour, was sent back caught brilliantly by Johnathan Trott.

Australia's tricky position could have turned any way. Instead Graeme Swann showed Australia the value of having a spinner in the side. Swann picked up Marcus North, although it appeared that the latter got a nick on the ball before being adjudged lbw. But there was no doubt about the second wicket that Swann picked up the important wicket of Katich. A second low catch to Trott saw Swann on a roll with the wicket of Brad Haddin. At seven down for 111, there was nothing good for Australia to be jumping about. Andrew Strauss though was all smiles, his plans played out to perfection, his bowling changes wrecking havoc on the opposition.

Broad finally got his five-fer, with the wicket of Mitchell Johnson even as the tail tried to negate the dismay of the morning. It ended a great session for England with Australia in deep disdain at eight down for 133 and one that Australia may rue in time to come.
