Ashes T 1 Day 5 Lunch: Australia Tighten the Noose

--> -->

As clichéd as it may sound, the writing is on the wall for England. The inability of their bowlers to breakthrough when Australia were batting now means that England are in danger of an innings defeat as things stand at lunch.

England lost three critical wickets in the morning session of day five of the first Ashes Test at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. Perhaps the biggest wicket Australia would consider they took would be that of Kevin Pietersen. Completely foxed by a Ben Hilfenhaus delivery, KP was bowled early in the day’s play, giving Australia their first scent of blood.

England captain, Andrew Strauss, survived the chaos as Australia sunk their teeth deeper into the hosts. However, he was undone by Nathan Hauritz, just seventeen runs to his name before he was caught behind by Brad Haddin, England’s score on four for forty-six from three for thirty-one for KP, a clear indicator that runs were proving harder to get and England more weary from the uphill task ahead of them. The England wicket keeper fared hardly much better, giving Hauritz his second wicket.

But from seventy for five, England went into lunch at 102 for five. The only man who looked like getting runs has been Paul Collingwood batting not out on thirty-five and joined by Andrew Flintoff at the crease. Unless these two can pull off a miracle, Australia will be looking to wrap the England innings as soon as possible.
