Australia appeared unable to recover from their shocking batting performance from day two of the fifth Test of the Ashes at the Oval as England remained glued to the task of setting Australia an improbable total.

England relied heavily once again on their captain, Andrew Strauss, pushing England from caution to aggression. Strauss marched on with a half century as he guided England into a formidable position.
By the time Strauss departed, he has forged a 118 run fourth wicket partnership with inspired debutant Jonathan Trott as they took England from a slightly precarious thirty-nine for three to 157 for four.

While Strauss played his part and was dismissed by Australia's desperate spin measure, Marcus North, Trott carried on in glorious vein. Andrew Flintoff came and went, managing only an eighteen ball twenty-two and not very memorable as the Test has been for him on a personal note of contributions as he batted a final time for England in Test match cricket. Stuart Broad's twenty-nine only made way for more agony for Australia as Swann came to the crease, in run making mode. By then, North picked his fourth wicket, but it had become pretty obvious that rather than blame the Oval pitch, Australia had to blame themselves for making a major tactical error.

Jonathan Trott was batting well on eighty-three, and Graeme Swann doing a freewheeling job with thirty-four as England edged closer to the 500 mark, on a 462 run lead at 290 for seven in the second innings at tea.
