England could only marginally halt Australia on a day that belonged entirely to the visitors.

Stumps on day one of the fourth Test of the Ashes saw Australia gain a significant lead of ninety-four runs with six wickets still in hand to wreck havoc on the hosts and destroy their hopes of an Ashes series victory a la 2005.
Australia finished the day on 196 for four with Michael Clarke once again looking like a dangerous proposition after helping draw the third Test at Edgbaston with his century.

James Anderson has proved worrisome int he match thus far as he appeared to have lost his incisive edge and struggling to make an impact as he has throughout the series. But Stuart Broad struck late in the day to remove the well set Ricky Ponting for seventy-eight and Mike Hussey for another dismal ten runs.
Michael Clarke suffered a nasty jolt to the back of his helmet as he took his eyes off the ball. Australia would not dare do too much of that tomorrow, they have a series to level and a huge opportunity awaits as Andrew Strauss has some serious pep talk to deliver before England can forget and move on from the horrors of day one.
