There was little sparkle. But it was effective none the less. India gave themselves a competitive chance as they finished their innings on 268, and set Sri Lanka a challenge to overcome for the Asia Cup trophy at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium.

Dinesh Karthik may not be ideal subsitute for a rampaging Virender Sehwag but on this occasion, he was the top scorer in the match with sixty-six runs after Gautam Gambhir was run out for fifteen. While he may not have been first choice, Karthik was the anchor in the match
Partnerships formed the crucial story in India's total. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India's captain, gave Karthik a hand in a forty-six but before that, was the first wicket partnerhsip of sixty-one with Virat Kohli that established sturdiness to the Indian innings.
Rohit Sharma, with forty-one runs, and Suresh Raina lent further weight to the innings with a half century partnership that ensured that India would at least make it to 268 although it was not one of their most flamboyant or convincing performances, although perhaps it is credit to Sri Lanka to have restricted the visitors to a total not entirely out of their reach.
