After Virender Sehwag thwarted Bangladesh's efforts to justify their reasonably good start, his opening partner, Gautam Gambhir, starred with the bat as India won the match by six wickets in less than thirty-one overs.

Gambhir played a huge role in that his eighty-two was the innings that did not give Bangladesh even a slim chance of causing an upset. Their batting innings was an anti climax to the way they begun but that was not the case with India.

Such as Gambhir's weight in performance that even the double loss of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma off successive balls in the fifteenth over (Sehwag having departed much earlier) courtesy the Bangladesh captain, Shakib Al Hasan, India were in no trouble as far as the result was concerned.
