Aus Pak T 3 Day 1 Stumps: Ponting, Clarke Raise Australia to Strength

The third Test of Pakistan's tour of Australia at Hobart finally got underway, with just one Akmal brother. But it was the day of the Australian captain who led the way for the hosts in the dead rubber.

Ricky Ponting, the Australian captain, scored a magnificent century to give Australia a stronghold over the match on the first day. In his endeavour, he enjoyed the company of his vice captain, Michael Clarke, who picked up a century himself.

Australia may have looked a touch perilous a three down for seventy-one, but the leadership in the Australian team came forth to post a strong 302 for three at the end of the day's place on the first day. Ponting was at the forefront of those efforts, edging the Pakistan hopes out after their fast bowlers, including the returning Mohammad Aamer, made inroads as the Australian openers fell relatively cheaply and Michael Hussey followed them back.

But since then there was no looking back for Australia as the unbeaten partnership for the fourth wicket caused the Pakistan shoulders to droop ever so slightly. While Australia have not run away, there is a sense of Australia having done a brilliant escape and the presence of both men, Ponting on 137 and Clarke on 111, will not give the Pakistan team fitful sleep overnight.
