Aus WI T 2 Day 5 Stumps:OZ Escape with a Draw, Skipper Gayle Shines

--> -->

Defying those that believe West Indies no longer deserve to be called a Test playing nation, the men from the Caribbean islands showed they still had a lot of pride in their game and were willing to show some of the good in the seemingly bad.

West Indies extended their narrow lead of twelve runs from the first innings to post a challenging target of 330 in front of the hosts. Leading from the front was none other than the West Indies captain, Chris Gayle, whose unbeaten 165 saw him carry his bat through the second innings.

The Adelaide Oval was witness to a defiance not expected after the visitors' loss in the first Test at the Gabba. However, West Indies showed they were made of sterner stuff, unlike what their recent record has displayed.

Gayle's innings proved paramount from the perspective that none of the other West Indies batsmen post even a half century in the second innings. As West Indies innings grew to 317, Australia's efforts towards a draw seem more certain than victory as the fifth day progressed.

Australia went into lunch at one down for sixty-two, having lost the wicket of Simon Katich. By tea, they had lost two more wickets including that of Shane Watson who was batting on forty-eight, as Dwayne Bravo struck for his first wicket of the innings.

Post tea, Bravo picked up two wickets in a vain attempt to give West Indies a victory. Sulieman Benn missed out on the Man of the Match to his captain.

But with constricted time, Australia were happy to get away with a draw although West Indies will feel that they have earned more than victory - they have earned some of their pride back.
