Aus WI T 3 Day 1: Australia In Command After Near Centuries for Katich, Watson

Perth saw contrasting performances on day one of the third Test between Australia and the West Indies but it is the hosts that will feel they have the match under control.

Kemar Roach kept up his promise, bowled hostile and managed to hurt the Australian captain twice. Ricky Ponting was forced to retire on twenty-three after the elbow bore the brunt. But he has not succumbed to any serious injury and will come back into play.

But Australia need not have worried too much. With next to no assistance for Roach, West Indies were disadvantaged to the point where both the Australian openers lined themselves for century.

The opening partnership between Simon Katich and Shane Watson is reaping dividends and it was once again on display. Katich will feel aggrieved to have been dismissed a second time on ninety-nine while Watson continues to ponder what keeps eluding his maiden Test century, falling to Roach for eighty-nine as Australia lost their first wicket for 132.

But there was more command in the Australian team with Michael Hussey proving his best by date is yet to come, an unbeaten eighty-one putting Australia firmly in the driver's seat at the end of the day and plenty for the West Indies to dig deep about if they are to try and win and the series.
