Simon Taufel, the world's leading umpires who win the most votes as arguably the best umpire in contemporary cricket, is a victim himself and not just of the terror attacks.

The ICC Umpire who has won numerous accolades rues missing out on officiating in the Ashes as well as in the last three Worlds Cup. That is because Australia has featured in all the three World Cups and with the unbiased rule that has come into play, it means Taufel, as an Australian, cannot officiate in a match that Australia plays with the neutral umpire coming in play.
Nevertheless he has insights into the game that include testing the pink ball as an alternative for day and night Tests proposed by the MCC at Lord's. He is interesting though in knowing the duration for which the ball can remain playable.

Taufel also has a word of caution after being trapped in a scary scenario that involved terrorists firing upon the Sri Lankan cricketers and ICC match officials, including match referee Chris Broad, in Lahore, Pakistan in March this year about umpires becoming aware of security arrangements in the countries they officiate.
Ricky Ponting, the Australian captain, has stated that he would have no concern with having an Australian such as Taufel or an Englishman for an umpire in an important series such as the Ashes because in his opinion, the best should be officiating in the best series. Ponting would feel his views were endorsed after the Australians had a grouse against Rudi Koertzen in particular in the Lord's Test of Ashes 2009.
