Azhar said, “Cricket is my passion and profession and it helps me to move politics.”

Although Azhar is in Kerala as part of the Congress Party, that he is still interested in getting into the game despite the match fixing saga of 2000 when his name was suggested by the late Hansie Cronje as having introduced a bookie, derailing Azhar’s career, came through when he said he would not step back if he was made a brand ambassador or a similar capacity for the Kochi team in the IPL. He also stated that Shashi Taroor’s intentions with the IPL franchisee were only for the good of the southern state. Spoken like a Congressman?
