Battle Heats up Between Ross Taylor and Brendon McCullum for NZ Captain after Vettori

Even as New Zealand look to resurrect their ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 ambitions, there are some private ambitions that are also surfacing. Most pertinently, it has to do with the change of guard after Daniel Vettori steps down as the New Zealand captain after the World Cup.

South Africa are not the only team looking at a new captain at the end of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 in the Indian sub continent. New Zealand will be lining up for a change of authority irrespective of how it pans out.

Vettori announced his Test cricket captaincy relinquishment and is line to quit the ODI captaincy at the end of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. In light of New Zealand's poor string of performances and a desperate rejuvenation on the cards, it is a tricky proposition for New Zealand to rebuild for the one tournament under Vettori and then, pass the baton on to a new face to the role.

Those in New Zealand circles appear divided on Vettori's successor. While Ross Taylor seems to be the logical choice given that Taylor has been handed the reins in Vettori's absence and by his own admission, has developed a certain amount of liking for the impending job.

Given that Ross Taylor occupies a pivotal role for New Zealand cricket as clearly the stand out talent with the penchant for enjoying that responsibility, it would seem that Taylor is the obvious choice.

However, Taylor's position as Vettori's successor is not without competition. There are those that believe Brendon McCullum may be a good option for New Zealand, given that New Zealand has been in a slump and is in need of some serious inspiration. Given McCullum's rambunctious approach to batting, their hope is that McCullum can bring that aggression and convert it into a bold leadership role for New Zealand to help raise his profile from the doldrums.

However, with New Zealand intending to build a team for the future, perhaps it would be more prudent to put the reins of the team in the hands that is going to be around for the next five years and Taylor seems to be that bet.
