BCCI Says No Indian Cricket Team for Asian Games. Why?

--> -->

The BCCI have told the Indian Olympic Association that they will not be sending an Indian cricket team – no men’s team or women’s team – for the cricket discipline of the Asian Games. The question really is why? Is it because of the feud between sports authorities and autonomous bodies that do not want to relinquish power?

Prof. Ratnakar Shetty told the media, “We would not be able to send our team, both men and women, for the Asian Games in China because of international commitments. We have communicated the same to the Indian Olympic Association.”

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) is believed to have included cricket in the Guangzhou Games in China only after all four Asian Test playing nations – Bangladesh, India, Paksitan and Sri Lanka, agreed to send their teams in a bid too boost ratings since cricket has such a huge following.

It seems like a tragedy because while Pakistan and Sri Lanka are believed to be trying to put together at least a second string team because of their international commitments, the BCCI seems to have categorically made its stance clear.

While the reason of a hectic international cricket schedule is valid, it appears there is more at play here since the BCCI does not stand by orders from the IOA. Sri Lanka has to report to the Sports Ministry and Pakistan are also not against sending another team. Is this a matter then of showing who’s boss or does this have anything to do with the fact that the Indian cricketers have refused to sign the WADA contract?
