There have been numerous occasions when team India has lost so badly in the past and the fanatics have mounted out their frustrations on the players the coach and the Board, but the latest amendment to the BCCI norms over player-payments is something that’s new to the cricketing critics in India - Chief administrative officer of the BCCI Ratnakar Shetty said, that the criteria for the match fee structure of the Indian players will be the team performance and not individual performance.
He quoted,
“The proposal is to take into consideration the performance of the team as a whole and not individuals for players’ match fees.”
This means that the performance-related match fee that the players get irrespective of a win or a loss from the Board of Control for Cricket in India will now be based on the performance of the team as a whole and not individual performance - unlike before only 60% of the fee will be certain and post a win the rest with a bonus will be given but on a loss nothing above 60% is assured, asked what happens in case of a drawn Test Mr. Shetty replied the same is yet to be finalized.
Query:
Why is the board coming out with such standards? Does it think this will work as an impetus for the team moral for an integrated performance? Cricket is more than just game in India it is a phenomenon, with even a layman holding his own opinion - When you play for the nation, you play for its honor, players driven by money don’t deserve a place at this platform, it’s bizarre to comprehend the Board baiting the players with such bones, this will mar the entire spirit of the game - The players who were paid both for the individual and team performance make mockery of the game, then how do we expect them to perform when there is no personal motive involved.
Alternative:
The only conventional way for a better performance from the Indians would be an improved selection criterion - not mere domestic performance that is inapt in providing the similar conditions present outside the sub-continent. The Indian selection committee chairman Dilip Vengsarkar will leave for South Africa after picking the squad for the three-Test series on November 30: What will Mr. Vengsarkar do in South Africa after making the selection, other than blowing the funds - his cause would have been justified had he visited there before making the selection opting only those players who he and the committee see have adapted to the conditions there and will be able to stand a gritty fight in the longer version of the game.
On the third ODI in Cape Town today:
Team India hasn’t had a lot of practice ahead of the crucial game due to slight showers - India goes into the game undecided on its team formation in both spheres, what batsmen to be picked who can negotiate the spiting bounce of the track (coz another batting let down could instigate further criticism), what bowling formation to go in with - strike bowler Munaf Patel missing out with an ankle injury, should Kumble be included, should the side go in with seven batsman and four frontline bowlers or five specialist bowlers be included - These will be some issues that would be a bone in the throat for Rahul Dravid and Greg Chappell.
