Cameron White Is Australia's Twenty20 Captain as Clarke Goes Ponting's Way to Skip T20s

Cameron White must consider himself fortunate because fortune did smile on him, albeit belatedly but wisely. Michael Clarke gave up the Twenty20 captaincy and it is obvious he has eyes for the bigger prize.

White was considered one of the front runners for the post of the Australian Twenty20 captaincy at a time when Ricky Ponting gave up the title after losing the Ashes of 2009 in England. In a bid to prolong his career in a format that better suited his traditional tastes, Ponting decided to give up on a format that he had not particularly taken a liking to.

Michael Clarke was considered heir apparent to the Australian captain with the exception of Twenty20, where Clarke seemed to be still adjusting to. It then came as a shock that the Australian selectors chose to overlook Cameron White's exceptional skills and go with Clarke in a bid to maintain continuity of captaincy across all formats.

But with Clarke's back problem acting up and his not really being able to convince people that Twenty20 and Clarke were made for each other, it seemed wise that Clarke has moved out of the role and let the rightful owner, in this case White, take his place.

Clarke has lost his aura as the heir apparent with his recent struggles and with Ponting's captaincy coming under fire, Australia is in a dilemma over whether Clarke is the right person for the position yet and if Ponting will continue in his role despite the flak he received in the course of Ashes 2010, it is will perhaps be because Australia are struggling to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
