CL T20 Match 10: MI's Tendulkar Singles out Pollard for Praise as Guyana are Trounced

The Mumbai Indians captain, Sachin Tendulkar, heaped praise of Trinidad and Tobago import, Kieron Pollard, after he batted his fellow West Indies domestic cricket team, Guyana, to help MI stay alive in the Champions League Twenty20 2010 in South Africa.

Mumbai Indians needed the win against Guyana at Kingsmead, Durban after they lost both their opening encounter and in serious danger of being run out of the tournament early, unlike their contemporary IPL teams.

Shikar Dhawan and Tendulkar began well for MI amidst cloudy conditions but it was Pollard who provided the impetus that virtually put the game out of Guyana's reach. Dhawan and Tendulkar starred in an eighty-two run partnership for the first wicket that lasted the better part of eleven overs with Tendulkar scoring forty-eight runs from thirty-nine balls before he was stumped off Davendra Bishoo who picked up three wickets in the innings.

Dhawan fell shortly thereafter to the same bowler for thirty-nine and that was when Pollard took matters into his own hand. Pollard was merciless in his thirty-ball seventy-two run unbeaten innings in which he torched Guyana with nine huge sixes as Mumbai Indians rollicked to 184.

Guyana have faced a torrid time themselves, under pressure to repeat the performances of T & T from last year's CL T20 edition in India. Ramnaresh Sarwan himself has been under severe duress after being denied a central contract by the West Indies Cricket Board due to fitness and perhaps it fired him to point out a thing or two.

Guyana lost Swenarine Chattergoon early but Sarwan remained glued to the task, scoring forty-six runs off thirty-eigth balls. But unfortunately Guyana missed substance in the form of a big partnership and that put paid to the run chase.

Narsingh Deonarine kindled hope as did Christopher Barnwell but it was never going to be sufficient as the run rate was beginning to catch up with them in the crucial end overs when Guyana needed someone to fire a la Pollard as Harbhajan Singh and Dwayne Bravo put on the brakes.

Few words were exchanged between Bravo and Sarwan but the umpire did not see the need for an escalation. At the fifteenth over mark, Guyana needed seventy-two from thirty balls but they lost the batsman established at the crease, Sarwan, and there was no one who fired on the day to reduce the deficit of defeat, let alone win it outright.

Guyana lost by thirty-one runs.
