The Highveld Lions were near, yet so far. Had they won, they would have made in three wins in three days for the host nation's teams in the Champions League Twenty20 2010. Instead they had to digest a bitter defeat after the highs of beating the Mumbai Indians.

The South Australian Redbacks captain, Michael Klinger, played one of the most scintillating knocks of the Champions League Twenty20 2010 yet as he led his team to victory over the South African team.
Three run out following the skipper's match winning knock failed to stop the Redbacks and left the Lions bitterly disappointed that they could not win two on the trot. Klinger was completely dominant even as he waged a seemingly single battle. Callum Ferguson, who has not played for Australia after being set back by injury, helped out with forty-seven runs of his own. klinger's seventy-eight runs from forty-eight balls that included stunning five sixes was the one knock that could and would derail the Lions, leaving them with the daunting task of chasing 179 for victory after the Lions' captain, Alviro Petersen, won the toss and chose to bowl first.

The match then bcame a battle between captains as Petersen tried to emulate his own ways from the first match. Chasing an enormous total by South African standards would not be easy, but Petersen was playing the captain's knocks, scoring fifty-six from thirty-five balls defied the innings as it panned out.
Petersen never found a partner or successor in the course of the innings as Shaun Tait, with three wickets, and Dan Christian, with two wickets, closed ranks and strangled the Lions ever so gradually, such that as the match drew to a close the Lions needed fifteen runs off the last three deliveries, after a frenetic fight and jangling nerves, but no miracle was forthcoming as they lost the match by eleven runs.
