CL T20 Match 7: Redbacks Stun MI Whose Horror Fielding Undoes Batting Heroics

A second match, Jonty Rhodes would be a furious, frantic individual in the Mumbai Indians dressing room. That was because after the IPL team made a significant comeback in their batting efforts, they let the South Australian Redbacks slip right through their fingers.

It was a match of contrasts for the Mumbai Indians who desperately needed to win the match to stay in the Champions League Twenty20 2010 in South Africa. That now remains distant with them losing two matches in a row.

MI were in deep trouble as Sachin Tendulkar had a rush of blood moment as Aaron O'Brien picked up a wicket to remember as the MI team slipped to two down for thirty-five by the end of the sixth over. Trouble seemed to be beckoning them at three down for forty-seven when JP Duminy disappeared.

Saurabh Tiwary then turned the match dramatically around, walloping the Redbacks bowlers around, unmindful of the situation and at one point, slamming three sixes in a row at Kingsmead, Durban. The Mumbai Indians seemed to find their rhythm with forty-four off twenty-five balls.

Then began the Calypso and the Redbacks seemed to have suffered a turn for the worse as Kieron Pollard wielded the long handle of the bat to terrific effect, thirty-six runs from twenty-one balls yielding four sixes. At one point, Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo had such a easy breezy moment that they virtually danced, bobbing their heads to the music. 180 runs came in thunderous fashion and ti appeared the Mumbai Indians were back in business.

But the dismal side to the MI in this edition of the CL T20 quickly emerged. Jonty Rhodes, the MI fielding coach, was pretty disappointed after the last match. He would be virtually speechless after this one because of the three regulation catches that went down, the MI captain, Sachin Tendulkar, was guilty of one and Saurabh Tiwary, with the sweet timing with the bat, dropped two sitters to let the Redbacks off the hook.

From that point on, it seemed obvious that luck and MI's poor fielding were on Redbacks' side and with Daniel Harris, the Redbacks came hard at the IPL team, despite the daunting chase ahead of them. Another man who accompanied him in the half century column was none other than the Redbacks' skipper Michael Klinger who is enjoying a purple patch in the tournament, although two matches owuld be early to call it that.

Even as the game seemed much Redbacks' for the taking, Ali Murtaza and Lasith Malinga ruffled a few feathers as Redbacks went down to three down for 127 at the fifteen over mark. With the run rate still steep, the MI sensed a brief hope, but brief it remained because the Mumbai Indians were guilty right through the match of letting the opposition convert two into threes and displaying the kind of sloppy fielding that would embarrass school boys.

Daniel Christian, Cameron Borgas and Tom Cooper then combined in some blistering hitting to ensure that the Redbacks maintained their reputation as a tough, dangerous team for whom losing is not an option.
