Those hollering about too much cricket going around or the IPL being an exorbitant affair at the expense of the sport, brace yourself. If the IPL governing council has its way, as is being planned, there will be a Champions League Twenty20 2011 qualifier tournament before the Champions League Twenty20 2011 itself!

According to the plans, the IPL 4 was supposed to yield three IPL teams for the Champions League Twenty20 2011 roughly slated for September-October, 2011. However, it would appear that there may yet be a fourth IPL team in the CLT20 2011 if the new mini tournament comes into effect.

With the IPL forming the crux of interests in Twenty20 leagues worldwide, the IPL governing council may be looking to kill two birds with one stone. It is no hidden matter that the IPL 4 has shown dismal viewer ship. By inculcating more IPL teams, perhaps the IPL governing council is doing its part to ensure that with four of the ten teams in the Champions League Twenty20 2011, there will be more interest in the tournament that also features Twenty20 champions from other countries.

There is also a proposition to reduce the CLT20 teams from twelve to ten, which basically means that apart from the three IPL teams, top two Twenty20 teams from South Africa, top two Twenty20 champions from Australia and one team from England, the others will have to fight for the remaining two spots.

Filling up those spots will result in a Champions League Twenty20 Qualifier tournament wherein the fourth IPL team in the IPL 4 season will compete against the likes of teams from Sri Lanka, West Indies and New Zealand to decide the two teams that will share the limelight with the other eight in the Champions League Twenty20 2011.

While it may seem noble to want to make the tournament air tight and ensure that the very best take their place in the battle of the champions, it would seem that even as the IPL is fighting for a spot in the international cricket calendar - the IPL 4 literally being squeezed behind the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 - and the Champions League Twenty20 tournament also crunched in, windows in the midst of a bustling cricket calendar as also the complaints about the overkill of the Twenty20 format will be something that will need to be gauged.

But that has not stopped the IPL before and if the plan is as concretely finalized as it appears to be, it is time to slot in that Champions League Twenty20 2011 qualifier!
