Cricketer For Cricketer---- Zaheer Bartered For Uthappa

By Veena Gabriel

It is clear indication that cricket has now become a market and cricketers are commodities, last year it was for money and now we are going back to the times when bartering took place keeping in mind the requirement of both the parties in kind not in cash.

This time the parties involved are Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Mumbai Indians. The commodities are Zaheer Khan going to the Mumbai Indians and Robin Uthappa going back to his home city.

At first Zaheer was brought for US$450,000 and Mumbai paid US$ 850,000 for Robin, this time there is no money involved.

Zaheer and Uthappa both did not show much promise in the IPL. Zaheer with 13 wickets in 11 games and Robin with 320 runs in 14 games were not at all impressive. But both have improved a lot in subsequent games. Zaheer gave a good performance in the tests against Australia and England and helped Mumbai to win the Ranji trophy by an eight wicket haul. Robin also showed good promise when he led Karnataka in Ranji in semi finals and made three centuries.

Zaheer will be taking place of Shaun Pollock as the spearhead for the Mumbai Indians while Robin's place has already been filled by Shikar Dhawan.

The opening of such trading window is a clear message to all the non performers. You will have to give sterling performances or you can be traded or worse booted out unceremoniously.
