Here is a burning example to prove the popular dictum Cricket is no more a gentle man’s game. It would be also an easy reference to show how racial stereotyping is dominating international cricket. We notice players defaming players by contradictory remarks both in and outside the field, but this time a quite different incident took place in the ongoing Sri Lanka - South Africa Test in which a TV commentator allegedly insulted a player in a live comment.
Dean Jones, the former bigwig Australian cricketer who turned TV commentator has had called Hashim Amla a terrorist on live television during the fourth day’s play between Sri Lanka and South Africa at Colombo. Following the comment, Ten Sports, a Dubai based sports channel sacked Jones.
Amla is a Muslim who made his debut in this match. He took the catch off the bowling of Shaun Pollock to dismiss Kumar Sangakkara for 39. Jones said, the terrorist has got another wicket. Here terrorist is a reference to Amla.
The International Cricket Council(ICC) should enact more stringent rules to check the communal-passion comments from the players.
