If you were one of the cricket viewers screaming at the television set, pleading with the Indian team to get on with the match in the final hour of play in the second ODI in Nagpur against Sri Lanka, the ICC match referee, Jeff Crowe, has taken immediate cognizance and banned the Indian captain for two ODIs.

The ban on Mahendra Singh Dhoni begins immediately with the third ODI in Cuttack and the fourth ODI in Kolkata. Dhoni, who scored a belligerent century in difficult circumstances in the match, was forced to swallow the bitter pill of watching his team lose the match by three wickets and then, have the ban imposed upon him to play no part in the next two matches, leaving him with just the fifth ODI in New Delhi.
But if one is wondering about the severity of the ban, India's violation came under the serious over rate offence necessitating the ban. It is no wonder given that India were easily forty minutes over the time of finish, constantly having mid pitch conferences and revisiting the fielding positions after practically every ball.
More frustration for the Indian captain.
In his absence, reluctant captain Virender Sehwag will lead the Indian team for the next two ODIs.
While earlier the fines alone have not helped to stop the malady of slow over rates, now the captains have to bear the brunt directly. But whether it will actually affect teams enough to not repeat the offence still seems up in the air and one wonders if the age old decision to dock a team five runs for every over bowled out of time will actually come into being and enforce a stringent discipline to adhering to the time constraints.
