It’s euphoria time all around in Ranchi. Hardly three years at the international level and the bouncy motorbike freak in the commercial world the courageous Indian wicket-keeper, Dhoni will lead India’s one-day side for the home series against Australia and arch rivals, Pakistan.
Surprisingly, former skipper Dravid stepped down from the post last week leaving the BCCI to work over a new ordeal amid ongoing search for a new head coach. Among the veterans Tendulkar and Ganguly, whose cricketing days are being numbered, bringing the youngster on the forefront is indeed the right choice. This should probably be a long spell for Dhoni in grooming the Indian side and guiding them to the 2011 World Cup.
Currently leading a squad dominated by youngsters at the ICC World Twenty20, visibly portrays his exceptional maturity of age.
However, not risking him for the five-day role seems inauspicious for me. Indian Board deems, two crucial jobs of a wicket-keeper and the skipper carries immense physical and psychological pressure at the test level. But can the Board have an answer to the dominance shown by Gilchrist and former England Captain Alec Stewart, despite appointed for the dual role?
Indisputably his new errand carries the pressure of meeting the expectations of India’s huge population for its highest-profile national sport; let’s see how Dhoni counters it.
