Does Shilpa Shetty Have a Point with Respect to the Rajasthan Royals and the BCCI?

One of the most visibly aggrieved teams is the Rajasthan Royals. One of its co owners, Bollywood actress, Shilpa Shetty, makes a claim against the BCCI. But does she really have a point?

Shilpa sounded hurt by the BCCI decision to terminate her team from the IPL 4 season. While careful not to upset the BCCI, Shilpa suggested that the BCCI was in the know how all along about the equations with the Rajasthan Royals and therefore, the question of any surreptitious wrong doing does not arise.

She claims that when she and her husband, Raj Kundra, decided to join hands with the Rajasthan franchisee, the BCCI was given, as per the norms, five percent of the amount. She claims that the BCCI cannot claim that their participation is illegal if they have already accepted the amount.

She also further states that the franchisee would be willing to "compensate" for any errors on their part if the BCCI would sit down and talk to them directly. She, however, refused to drag Lalit Modi into the conversation, stating he had nothing to do with the Royals and that his brother-in-law, Suresh Chellaram, was known as a stakeholder from the beginning.

But the bone of contention with the BCCI is that Chellaram was a hidden entity that the board was unaware of and has since put the Royals in the dock on the suspicion that Modi has vested interests in the IPL franchisee as a result of his personal association.

There is also speculation that Chellaram is unwilling to let go of his stake to allow the team to go on, which was unpalatable to the BCCI.

While what Shilpa is suggesting appears to be valid, it can also be debated that the BCCI put too much power into the hands of Modi and as a result, failed to notice that Modi's own relation had a leading hand in the team until the controversy broke out which is when they decided to take action.

BCCI will also have to answer Shilpa's statement that when they have accepted a percentage of a fee, they should also explain their move.
