Indian skipper Rahul Dravid steps down of the captaincy role ahead of the forthcoming one-day series against Australia and Pakistan.
Dravid was named captain of the one-day side in October 2005 and was soon after made skipper of the Test team as well. Opted out of the ICC World Twenty20 currently on in South Africa with the captaincy being handed to Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The 34 year old has captained India in 25 Tests and 79 one-day internationals, although his ODI captaincy was a bit suspect, but he has been unarguably the best Test captain. Under his belt, India won eight Tests, including series wins in West Indies, Bangladesh and England. The ODI record, somewhat patchy began on a winning streak, where India set a record for 16 consecutive successful chases. More recently, the team had a first-round exit from the World Cup in the Caribbean and lost the Nat-West series to England 4-3.

Dravid to a channel said:

I want to concentrate on my own game. I will still give full co-operation to the team as a senior player and batsman.

The BCCI now faces a daunting task over who should captain the team in forthcoming series, as the ongoing extensive search for a new head coach is not yet accomplished.

Will the Board turn its eyes again to Ganguly, who lost the job after falling out with former coach Greg Chappell, or will it be the veteran, Tendulkar. Nevertheless, they might seek a younger leader like wicket-keeper Dhoni, then agan Yuvraj Singh could also be the other choice.
