After brushing away concerns that the certain cricket stadiums would struggle to shape up in time for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, the BCCI is faced with the proposition to find an alternative venue as the ICC has ruled out the first match at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

The iconic cricket stadium is set to cause heartburn for Kolkata cricket fans, already simmering over the lack of bids for Sourav Ganguly in the IPL 4 auctions. There were always going to be concerns that the construction work at the two stadiums, Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and Eden Gardens were taking longer than usual. However, not two days, those concerns were given the speculative tone and there was confidence all round that there would be no lags to the going ahead of the tournament.

However, the ICC has dropped the bomb on the BCCI by cancelling the India v England match originally scheduled for the 27th of February at the Eden Gardens. The ICC chief executive, Haroon Lorgat, conveyed that problem to the BCCI stating that host venue obligations in relation to cricket operations, media, broadcast and sponsorship facilities were not finalized and/or confirmed by the venue.

The ICC has explicitly stated that in its expert opinion, it did not believe Eden Gardens would be in readiness for the match and therefore, by missing the deadline, Kolkata would have to make do without the match. While there would be several challenges with a change of venue, the BCCI has no choice but to now find a new ground to host the match.
