Half centuries from Callum Fergusson and Cameron White helped Australia get a decent score on board against England in the first ODI at the Oval.

Shane Watson and Cameron White put up a strong partnership of eighty-five runs after the early loss of Tim Paine. But after White's injected momentum, making a half century to Watson's forty-six, Australia suffered quick jolts.

White, promoted to number one predictably to add fluster at the start of the innings, did the job by getting Australia steady runs at a fair clip and ensuring that Australia were slowly converting an early loss into a solid start.

But England got back with a run out to remove him while Paul Collingwood turned his arm over to remove Watson and also the stand in Australian captain, Michael Clarke, who was building a consolidating partnership with Fergusson, for forty-five runs. That seventy-nine partnership was important from Australia's stand point as England found their niche and slowed down Australia with spin and slow bowling.
Adil Rashid failed to pick up a wicket but his thirty-seven runs from ten balls, this on his second ODI match, shows how stifled Australia got under England's second spinner.

It required the enormous efforts of Fergusson who batted right to the end of the innings and his unbeaten seventy-one emphasized how much Australia needed his late flourish as they did Cameron White up the order.
Australia now have the target on board which is important. England need to turn it on with the bat now to chase 261.
