England's goal to prevent Australia winning suffered a setback with the injury to Joe Denly. But they did a little breakthrough first up with Tim Paine.

England go into the first ODI without their latest entrant who football injury has denied him an opportunity to show his mettle against Australia. Australia in the meantime have tried to compensate their own loss with young blood.

Brad Haddin's finger injury has meant that he has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa as well giving Paine a rather long run in international cricket.

But it was not an omnious start at the Oval as England won the toss, chose to field and Paul Collingwood, who has handed the reins back to the England captain, Andrew Strauss, ran out the young Australian wicket keeper.

Undeterred, Australia sent in Cameron White to join Shane Watson and thus far, in the first ten overs, the combination have been largely drama free.

England are also missing the services of Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen in the most notable absentees but England, in a repeat of their strategy for their Ashes win at the Oval have decided to employ two spinners, Adil Rashid along with Graeme Swann.

Meanwhile Michael Clarke has slammed preparation plans at the rain affected Oval that saw two rain afflicted Twenty20 matches stating that the indoor nets, so valuable in wet English conditions, have been leased out.
