Pakistan's haunted batting once again left the hosts to grab the initiative and they grabbed the generosity with both hands.

Salman Butt, the Pakistan captain, will have kicked himself for having won the toss and elected to bat first in overcast conditions in the second Test at Edgbaston despite having the bowlers who could have exploited the conditions themselves.
Instead a combination of good, incisive, swing bowling, favourable conditions and poor discipline in Pakistan's batting contributed to their predicament. There was nothing to write home about as far as Pakistan's batting was concerned as James Anderson and Stuart Broad sliced through the batting like a hot knife through butter as Pakistan failed to adopt a positive approach and their over cautious batting did not leave much of a defense to talk about either.
Being bowled out for seventy-two in under forty overs would not leave Pakistan much of an opportunity unless their bowlers brought them back. But England's batting has shown more backbone and despite the double blow of losing both, Alastair Cook and England captain, Andrew Strauss, on the score of forty-four, England survived on the Pakistan largesse when Jonathan Trott was dropped to finish on thirty-one while the struggling Kevin Pietersen was batting resoluting on thirty-six as England finished the day on a lead, having made 112 for two.
