Andrew Flintoff is not capable to lead England. He needs to develop leadership quality. Because of his laidback style of captaincy, England paid a price in the test series against Sri Lanka. These are some of the remarks on Flintoff from the former England captain Mike Atherton.

Mike Atherton does not like to find Flintoff leading the national squad permanently. He thinks Flintoff's latest injury will turn out to be a blessing in disguise if it hinders him becoming full-time skipper.
Atherton says that England was missing the ruthlessness of Michael Vaughan. Flintoff is undeniably one of the leading all-rounders of the international cricket. However, he lacks a sense of leadership quality. He is not so strict in the field, for which England lost their series decider test against Sri Lanka.
He expressed,
The only positive benefit of the injury to Flintoff may be the end of his immediate captaincy ambitions. What England needed in the aftermath of the Ashes was somebody to focus minds and crack heads together, but Flintoff is an amiable man and his style of captaincy reflected that: England missed Vaughan's ruthlessness.
Andrew Strauss has replaced Flintoff for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka.
