Eoin Morgan Wins Over Bopara in England's Test Squad for First Test versus Sri Lanka

Apparently Eoin Morgan's aspirations to rejoin the IPL 4 have been delightfully destroyed as far as Morgan is concerned because he has made the Test team for England for the first Test against Sri Lanka in Cardiff.

Morgan was the centre of speculation as the youngster boldly declared his intentions of helping the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 4 qualifier stage if he was not given a chance by the England selectors for the first Test beginning on Thursday. With Ravi Bopara staking a serious claim by turning down the IPL 4 offer and playing for Essex, Morgan's comments were viewed with apprehension in how they would be viewed.

To be fair to Morgan, while he did want to use the opportunity of the IPL if the Test opportunity did not come his way, he was not using the issue as leverage as far as his selection was concerned. In fact it was his 193 runs for the Lions against the Sri Lankans in the tour match that probably won him the nod, not only showing his good form but also, his commitment albeit in a tour match, knowing fully well that Bopara was in contention as well and pipped ahead of him by several quarters of British media and cricket circles.

However, Morgan has insisted that the IPL was his opportunity to expose himself more and expand on his game while Test cricket was his aspiration. His talent has never been in doubt, in fact even winning him the praise of the likes of Sachin Tendulkar. That he has now won a spot on his merit is credit to Morgan for taking the risk of putting the IPL 4 season ahead of the domestic season in the England county cricket and then proving his credentials in the tour match to now win his place in the Test team.

Suffice it to say, for the opportunities coming his way, Morgan would be more than happy to don the white flannels against the Kolkata Knight Riders' bright jersey. Kolkata Knight Riders have already been preparing to fill in the spot, so it should not be viewed as too much of a setback.
