Former Umpire Says Warne, not Murali, Not Deserving of Highest WicketTaker Award

Muttiah Muralitharan is on the cusp of 800 Test wickets as he announces his retirement from Test cricket. However, those that berated his action continue to believe things are not right.

Former Australian umpire, Ross Emerson, does not believe Muralitharan deserves to go out of the show as the top wicket taker of all time. In his opinion, Muralitharan will remain the person he no-balled back in 1999 and he believes he did so with good reason. He even goes further to add that if anyone deserves the ultimate accolade for a bowler in Test cricket, it has to be former Australian leg spinner, Shane Warne, "I haven't changed my views in 15 years - he doesn't deserve the record. You couldn't compare his record to Shane Warne's - no one ever doubted the legality of Warne's action. Murali was a great competitor and a great bowler but a lot of the time he just didn't bowl within the limits of the law.”

It is something Murali has come to live with, those that hold him in high esteem and those that will continue to question his action, label him a chucker, and therefore, his success. But the record is there and Muralitharan is more than happy doing his bit to ensure it stays that way, for a while anyway.
