If Sunil Gavaskar's comments seem prophetic after the fiasco at the Ferozeshah Kotla stadium in New Delhi, it may have just elevated his stature for predicting a disaster.

The former Indian captain and opening batsman was put on the spot when asked to provide the pitch report for the fifth ODI between India and Sri Lanka. His assessment of the pitch as dodgy proved eerily true as the match was called off after twenty-four overs and plenty of exchanges and discussions.
Gavaskar had described the pitch in the following words, "It's a hair transplant pitch with bald patches and some patches of grass. Batsmen have to watch out. I am not sure about it. Looks like a batting first pitch. Difficult to predict what it will do."
That is exactly what the pitch did - left everyone baffled with no clear cut decision.
The former Indian cricketers are not mincing words either. They were heard making disparaging remarks about how the international match was played when the domestic Ranji Trophy matches were not played there either. Those leading with those comments included Bishen Singh Bedi.
As the electronic media went into overdrive soliciting comments, the former chairman of selectors, Dilip Vengsarkar, was heard saying that the BCCI and the BCCI need to look at the BCCI's Grounds and Pitch Committee and that the fans should have their hard earned money refunded.
If only the fans had heard that; perhaps they would have felt less aggrieved. It was a day when the pitch report, not the toss, that made the day!
