The first axe to fall was one that was self inflicted as Geoff Allot announcing that he was taking himself out of the equation as far as New Zealand cricket was concerned.

The New Zealand team manager announced that he was quitting the post of New Zealand Cricket's General Manager after he felt that a restructing was in order following New Zealand's humiliating defeat in Bangladesh.

This is what Allot had to say of his resignation,

I believe our elite athletes and teams need a combination of the best available high performance expertise and the knowledge of cricket experts who understand the technical aspects of the game.

On that basis the high performance structure that I consider is best for cricket's future would be different to the current structure, and with a different allocation of resources.

I have effectively restructured myself out of a job, but I truly believe this to be in the best interests of cricket.

New Zealand cricket came in for serious criticism in light of that ODI series defeat, particularly with the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 just around the corner and scheduled to be staged in the Indian sub continent with Bangladesh being one of the host countries.

Although the New Zealand coach, Mark Greatbatch, was scathing in his opinion of some of the young New Zealand cricketers, New Zealand have adopted a rather cautious approach to the Test series in India by announcing a relatively stable, conservative squad that did not see too many changes.

There have been calls from several former New Zealand cricketers asking for an overhaul of the game if New Zealand was to sustain itself against its more popular sport, rugby. There was a danger that New Zealand cricket could make heavy changes with the prospect of playing India.
