Herschelle Gibbs says he does not regret calling Pakistan fans "F***ing animals" on Pakistan's tour of South Africa in 2007. He claims that fans were not only gunning for him but also, misbehaving with his ex-girlfriend, Liesl Fuller, and his son from his association with her, Rashard. He claims that while his comments were caught on the stump microphone, Graeme Smith, the South African captain, got away with similar comments and that they had both had a laugh about it after wards.

He writes:

"I think it was a tactic aimed at getting me out of the team rather than them being mortally offended by the 'racial' slur. It was a gambit to disrupt the Proteas more than anything else.

They made a huge noise and even kicked Rashard, my son, and his mom, Liesl, out of their seats when they took over the area next to the pitch entrance that leads up to the changing room.

All of us Proteas were getting pretty irritated and unfortunately the stump microphones picked up our displeasure.

Gibbs claims to have said:

Stop acting like a bunch of fucking animals!

He also denied that his intentions had anything to do with racial undertones, stating his family has strong Muslim roots,

You could call me many, many things, but a racist was a bit of a stretch, to say the least. Especially concerning Muslims. I'm coloured, for goodness' sake. I've got four Muslim aunts and about 10 Muslim cousins. How could I be racist? My damn family is Muslim.

Gibbs also suggests that while Indian cricketers are not huge drinkers, although he singles out Rohit Sharma - his team mate at the Deccan Chargers in the IPL
