Graeme Smith hoped for a grand farewell to his ODI captaincy. However, instead he has been greeted by brickbats instead of congratulations upon his engagement to Irish model-singer, Morgan Deane, with whom he disappeared from India to holiday and return to India for the IPL 4.

The former South African captain gave up the captaincy by premeditated intentions. The end of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 ended up in tears for the jinxed teams at World Cups, with Graeme Smith and his men having to digest a rather embarrassing loss to New Zealand in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 quarterfinals.

But instead of sympathy, Smith has earned flak from passionate South African supporters back home for not returning with the rest of the South African cricket team and giving the much needed explanation to console their woes. The criticism has only got worse since particularly with the dual idea that Smith skipped South Africa for a couple of reasons.

It was learn in the week after South Africa's loss that Smith was holidaying in Ireland and thereafter even got engaged to his new girlfriend there. Instead of congratulating messages, Smith has been all over the news for the wrong reasons as many fans felt that Smith was interested in his relationship more than the aftermath for the team, naturally a hurt sentiment, even if misplaced, from the fans who expected this team in particular to break the jinx of past failed attempts.

Smith's story gets bizarre with the suggestion that Smith was skipping time to go back to South Africa and heading back from Ireland to India for the IPL 4, where he plays for the Pune Warriors, so as to avoid tax that is the norm for those out of the country for a certain period of time.

Either way this was certainly not how the skipper wanted his role to end, but perhaps the engagement and the stint with the IPL should take away the pain of it all by the end of the fifty-one saga.
