Harbhajan Singh made an interesting point at the end of the post match presentation ceremony and in the interview thereafter where he mentioned he hoped to take wickets and that that century had taken him by surprise.

For Harbhajan Singh, man of the match may not be unusual. The off spinner though shocked himself despite his own expectations. Bhajji was not happy that he had thrown away a golden opportunity in the first innings of the first Test in Ahmedabad of the India New Zealand after making sixty nine runs. However, his dreams of a maiden Test century were realized in a critical scenario for India as his partnership with V.V.S. Laxman helped save the blushes for the world's no.1 Test team.
Harbhajan acknowledged the efforts and encouragement of his team mates in the Indian team in his achieving the phenomenal record. This is what he had to say at the post match presentation:
Never dreamt I would be MoM for batting, not in Tests, maybe in the one-dayers. Fantastic to get my hundred.A big thanks to ( V.V.S. ) Laxman, without whom I would not have scored this.
And also a big thanks to Sachin ( Tendulkar ), Viru ( Virender Sehwag ), and everyone who wanted me to score a century. Today I didn't disappoint them.
Laxman was tapping my shoulder after every over, it was great to have him there. Because of him only, I got those runs.
I couldn't celebrate much because I was too tired. My hands are a little sore because I have never batted that long. More than the hundred, I was happy we saved the game.
Harbhajan Singh stated matter of frankly that once V.V.S. Laxman and Zaheer Khan departed in quick succession, he decided not to hang around and rely on Pragyan Ojha and played an inside out shot for six over extra cover to score his maiden Test century.
Harbhajan Singh also acknowledged that the gesture after he got to the triple digit mark was hsi tribute to Sachin Tendulkar who has been a long time mentor for the off spinner.
