Even as the Chennai Super Kings are rejoicing the fact that Mathew Hayden’s retirement now leaves him available for the entire season, Cricket Australia have laid down the law and Hayden’s medical bills lay pending.

CA decided to flex its muscles in the aftermath of Hayden’s retirement and in a clear indication that while it does not deny players the opportunity to the lucrative IPL, it will not encourage it either. Perhaps Mitchell Johnson has been wise as has been Michael Clarke till date.
Blaming Hayden’s Achilles heel problem as having emerged while playing for the IPL, CA has slashed his retainer for returning home midway from Australia’s tour to the West Indies over the injury under the Overseas Club Playing Agreement. There will be no compensation or insurance for the games missed.
Australian Cricketers Association have though stepped in for their former team mate and dug to of their insurance pool to manage Hayden’s injury finances. But Hayden remains adamant that he has had a chronic condition with the injury while playing for Australia over a span of sixteen years and therefore, is not entitled to the punishment being meted by Cricket Australia.
If this handling of Hayden’s case which many believe is not in keeping with CA”s operations as they ought to be becomes a precedent, the IPL may well have a tough time convincing more players to fall for the lure while they are still contracted to play for Australia. Interesting days ahead, wonder how the BCCI and Lalit Modi will handle this one!
